Speech & Language
Overview
Speech, language and communication are a key part of delivering the best outcomes for children’s social, emotional and educational development.
The Sure Start Speech and Language Therapist works to promote the speech, language and communication skills of children in the area through public health messaging, training staff and parents, group programmes, screening for speech and language difficulties, providing advice, and signposting to other core services.
Parent and staff training tasks include:
- Support for Staff in the Developmental Programme for 2-3 Year Olds
- ‘Your Child’s Speech, Language and Communication Development’ Work-shops
- Elklan ‘Let’s Talk with Under 5s’ Course
Group activities for children include:
- Play and Talk (four-week programme promoting SLC through play)
- Rhyme Time (ongoing weekly programme promoting singing of song and rhymes)
The Speech and Language Therapist works closely with other staff and provides ongoing input into the wide range of other Sure Start programmes that can all be beneficial to a child’s speech, language and communication skills.
